The 2015 KDPPSA Spring Show was held on June the 7th in the KDPPSA building at the Odessa Fairgrounds. This year's show was sanctioned by the American Poultry Association, and our judges were William Post from New York State on poultry and waterfowl, and Jeff Waite on pigeons and rabbits.
We were concerned before the show about the avian influenza outbreaks in Western Ontario and across the United States. However, after careful consideration of all the available information we decided to go ahead. In spite of a number of exhibitors from "the west" being forced by the AI quarantines to cancel their plans to attend, we were very pleasantly surprised to receive our largest entry in several years - more than 475 birds and rabbits, including 56 large fowl, 197 bantams, 23 waterfowl, and 175 pigeons. The pigeon entry, in particular, was great with almost twice as many entries as last year. In touring the show hall I noted particularly strong classes of Indian Fantails (almost 30!) and Homers, Old English Game, Cochin, and Wyandotte Bantams, and Brahams and Australops in Large Fowl. Some pictures of the show hall are shown below.
The KDPPSA would like to thank all of our exhibitors for making the show a success. We thank our judges for a job well done, with special thanks to Jeff Waite for making himself available on short notice. Big thanks are due to the Quinte Pigeon, Poultry, and Pet Stock Association, and to Wayne Heyman, both of whom made very significant monetary donations to the KDPPSA which ensured the financial viability of the show and allowed us to increase the number of awards and prizes available considerably. We are also grateful to Lois Millen at Willows Agriservices for donating the shavings used at the show and for her contribution to the exhibitor's raffle. We thank Glen Brosowski of the Fanciers's Specialty Company for visiting the show and for his raffle contributions. Greg Cole donated three very nice plaques for some of our champions, as did Frank Goodfellow, and Dave Snider provided a handsome porcelain vase for champion waterfowl - we thank all three gentlemen for their generosity. Last but not least, we thank Bill Harrison for doing his usual excellent job as show chair, and to Frank Goodfellow, Ken Crawford, Bill Godkin, and Reg Watson for their help in setting up the show hall, clerking, and generally making the show run smoothly - we couldn't do it without your help!
As he has done for many years, Bill Harrison gave one of the excellent show boxes he builds to each of our first-time junior exhibitors. Bill is shown below with this year's recipients: Kaleb McCulloch and Avery Seay.
